Meeting Minutes
Wednesday May 13, 2015
Opening:
The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order by Loryn at 1:30 pm in the BPK Conference Room
In Attendance:
Jake, Alex, Jordan, Garveen, Loryn, Sabrina, Erina, Parham, Jas
Open Issues
-Jas Hans, the new SFSS Science Representative attended the meeting today and introduced himself
Clubs Days
-Loryn has tables booked for next week on Tuesday and Thursday (May 19th and 21st)
-we will be cancelling due to the lack of availability of BPKSA Executives for shifts at the table and since the number of undergraduates attending school in the summer is very small
BPK Peer Mentorship Program – Fall 2015
-Alex and Matt will be taking over the peer mentorship for fall
-anyone interested in becoming a mentor in the fall, contact Matt (mrbutt@sfu.ca)
-Alex will talk to some classes to recruit mentors for the program
-Alex and Matt have discussed doing more mentor or mentee social events to increase bonding
-in addition, SFSS would like to do a Faculty of Science wide Peer Mentorship Program to include students who are in sciences but undeclared
The Princeton Review (TPR)
-TPR is similar to Kaplan in that they aid students interested in professional school to prepare for tests like the MCAT, DAT, LSAT etc
-TPR would like to partner with the BPKSA and are offering some benefits, which include:
-$200 discount for members on any TPR (the Princeton Review) classroom course
-Three 50% executive member discounts
-promotional/education materials upon request
-free mock tests with follow-up results / strategy session
-free information session
-Loryn will inform us with more information on this partnership and will follow up to see if there is a cost
Burnaby Heights Hats Off Day
-want BPK students to participate in the Fun Run portion in beginning of the parade portion; is a 500 m run
-June 6 from 10:00 – 1130 am
-Loryn will send out an email to the undergraduate emailing list for anyone interested
Housekeeping Items/Update from Sabrina:
-Sabrina will advertise on the BPK website & the monitor the meeting time & the BPK peer mentorship program
-we need to increase BPKSA recruitment of younger students ASAP since most executives will be graduating next year and there will be lots of vacant spots
-Loryn will draft a recruitment email and will send it to Sabrina to send out
-need to update the email list so everyone who signed up to receive emails on club days can receive emails
-There is an alumni meeting in September which they need volunteers for
-this is an excellent opportunity for some networking, so if you are interested let Sabrina know
-need to start thinking of dates for the Terry Fox Run, BPK Kickoff
-Loryn and Josh talked to Glen about giving the 2015 Staff Achievement Awards Darleen and Cheri for all of their work and contribution to BPK; deadline in September
-Glen emailed Loryn about nominating BPK Faculty for Excellence in Teaching awards
-deadline is need to be in by mid-June; no BPK professor has ever won
-Marrianne will help Loryn set up a poll for this
Summer Plans
-we need to come up with some ideas for social events for BPKSA Executives or a departmental wide one
-ideas include hiking: diez vistas, lynn valley, deep cove; maybe a soccer game
