Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, April 6, 2016

Opening:

The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 12:30pm by Loryn in room K9622.

In Attendance:

Loryn, Garveen, Jordan, Kirstin, Sabrina, Meghan, Debbie, Madison, Megan, Selina

Open Issues:

1) Motions

-Jordan motioned to reimburse Alex Lukac $70 for the BPK Peer Mentorship Skating event. Garveen seconded it. The motion was unanimously approved.

2) YEP

-around 55 people attended and everyone loved the venue at the DAC!

Some tips for next year’s event:

-apply for a grant and book the space earlier in the semester (would allow more money for food and more time for advertising)

-make sure you go through the SFSS for booking the DAC and ordering food

-could ask for them to serve dessert later or cover it so it doesn’t run out when dinner is served

-ensure there are more gluten free and vegetarian options

-we think $15 is a good price for tickets to stay at

-class presentations need to be a major priority

-can hang posters to advertise around residence as these students are already up on campus

-need to make sure AQ table bookings are done very early in the semester as this is a better venue for ticket sales

-slideshow was good to have going on in the background, next year we can put together a more comprehensive one with pictures from all events (could hold a photo contest or have students submit their own pictures to add)

3) Web Survey

-used so the Undergraduate Program Committee can find out what students are happy with and unhappy with in the department

Some questions we brainstormed to include on the survey are:

-What is your intended/declared major?

-How many years into the program are you?

-Expected graduation date?

-In co-op or intend to apply to co-op?

-Is there anything you would like to see changed in the BPK department?

-Do you feel like you know how to get involved in the BPK department? If not, what is getting in the way?

-What are the strongest features of the program?

-What are the weakest features of the program?

-Do you feel adequately prepared for a future career after your degree? If not, how could this be improved?

-Are there certain courses that you would like to see offered?

-Are there any issues you have with current courses offered? (I.e. course content, way the course is taught)

-Have you been able to enroll in all the classes you wanted to take or have there been any issues? (I.e. how often the course is offered, size of the class)

-Is there anything else you would like to discuss that hasn’t already been addressed in this survey?

Some current issues we discussed in this meeting are:

-Is there anything we can do about waitlists? If you have been on the waitlist for one class a few times can you somehow get priority registration for it another semester?

-BP students have limited options for the upper division electives they can take

-as BPK undergrads we receive a lot of emails from different members of the department

-Sabrina had a great idea concerning this and will start combining all the information from the department into a “weekly update” email

-for the USRA application process would it be possible for professors to look at our upper division GPA rather than our CGPA?

-would like for more consistency with grading across all courses in BPK and have profs be more transparent with their grading schemes and if they can be subject to change throughout the semester

4) Interim Positions

We need to fill spots for:
