Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, January 13, 2016
Opening:
The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 12:30pm by Loryn in room K9622.
In Attendance:
Jake, Alex, Ashly, Garveen, Madison, Kirstin, Daniela, Megan, Loryn, Sabrina, Ran, Daniela, Darleen, Cheri, Erina
Open Issues:
1) Career Event
-lab tours will be of the Cardiovascular Physiology Lab and the Injury Prevention and Mobility Lab
-Joyce can’t make it as a Med student speaker, but Gina and Ian can come instead
-sign in for Lab tours will be next door in the main BPK conference room at 3:15; ideally we will have two groups around 20 people each (run tours from 3:30-4:20)
-Registration for Lab Tours (3:15): Megan
-Lab Tour Leaders (3:30): Daniela, Megan, Jake, Garveen
-Table set up in Saywell (3:30): Ran, Erina, Alex (also need signs and name tags to help direct exhibitors towards Saywell)
-Sign in/Registration at Saywell (4:15): Alex
-we need a welcome speaker, Angie did it last year, Garveen will email both Angie and Glen to see if either of them are available to speak this year
-have AQ 3150 and AQ 3153, Cheri will arrange for recording in these rooms as well!
-Break Out Sessions:
1) 5:30-6:10
PT: Midori (PT), Jenny (Student), + other UBC Students (4) as exhibitors …..(Kirstin, Megan)
Resp Therapist: Monica (RT)……(Matt, Ashly, Loryn)
2) 6:55-7:35
OT/Ergo: Emma (OT+Ergo) …..(Garveen, Alex, Erina)
MD: Mo (MD), Hilary (MD), Ian (Student), Gina (Student), Amanda? (Student) …..(Megan, Loryn, Ran?)
-the BPKSA members in brackets beside each of the sessions will introduce each speaker and facilitate the question period
-Sabrina will print off smaller posters so that we can hand them out in our classes to advertise
-Kirstin is available Tuesday to put gift bags together and Ashly can help out further on Wednesday
-Door Prizes (old clothing, notebooks, can buy gift cards as well i.e. Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Renaissance?) — Kirstin will buy three $10 gift cards
2) Volunteering Experience
-an SFU alumni stopped by, Ryan Woodland (completed his undergrad in Kin and is now working on his MBA), who has created a program in Kenya that involves local health practitioners
-volunteers are needed for one month (13 specific clinics over the month) in either May, June, July & August
-need to be 19 years of age, attend a pre-departure training session and be medically inclined (doctors, nurses, pre-med students)
-application is all online at www.maasaimedical.org
3) BPK Peer Mentorship
-planning a skating event that’s looking to be about $5 per person
-they estimate a total cost of $75-$100 and are hoping the BPKSA can help with funding; we all agreed!
4) Clothing
-we like the larger font better for the back of the hoodies
-stick to the same colours for the hoodies as last time (grey, blue and red)
-could order the lanyards just to give out at Club Days in the Fall (no one would want to pay for them if we tried to sell them)
-not sure if we need a new design for Spring, can just maybe stick to hoodies this order? But could have Ty start designing one for next year’s clothing order
