Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, July 13, 2016
Opening:
The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 1:30pm by Garveen in the BPK Seminar Room.
In Attendance:
Garveen, Matt, Joanne, Bader, Emily, Megan, Alam
Open Issues:
1) BPK Kickoff
-for now just need to book the seminar room for the snack portion
-booklet is finished
2) BPK Welcome Day
-we want this event to be a more fun and social day for the first years (whereas BPK Orientation is more formal with the lab and Rec tours)
-include more time for icebreakers (i.e. Kirstin’s blood flow through the heart idea, design one where the students are able to find friends in their classes, etc.) and a BPK-related scavenger hunt (design clues that will lead them to different labs and important classrooms around campus i.e. MCPG over in TASC2, EPU in Kin Area, Kin 142 lab, 407/241 lab, etc.)
-the “Speaker Series” needs to be more relaxed and informal as well – will just invite the two grad students to come instead of having profs too
-need to decide on the structure of the talk (i.e. provide first years with tips and give them an opportunity to ask lots of questions)
-Megan spoke to Brent and he is able to come; Garveen will talk to Christina
-need to rename the day – possibly BPK 101?
-Revised schedule:
2:15-2:30 pm: Registration (BPK Seminar Room?)
2:30-2:35 pm: Migrate for icebreakers (maybe book a gym/field or use field near TASC?)
2:35-3:25 pm: Icebreaker + BPK Scavenger Hunt
3:25-3:30 pm: Migrate for Career Development Workshop
3:30-4:00 pm: Career Development Workshop (will need to book a room for this)
4:00-4:05 pm: Migrate for info session (BPK Seminar Room?)
4:05-4:30 pm: Info session + Refreshments
4:30 pm: Wrap-up + Swag Bags
-the department will be funding the swag bags (water bottles, pens, pins & brochures in the re-useable tote bags); will try and include lanyards in it as well
3) SFSS Update
-talks are still ongoing about the liquor cap on Core funding
-voted in favour of holding a by-election to elect another president this Fall
4) BPKSA Fall Elections
-must be held by the 3rd week of classes in September
-all positions need to be filled (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, SFSS Forum Rep, BPK & Kin Departmental Committees Reps, External Relations Officer, Promotional Coordinator)

5) Recruitment
-could put a reminder about our meeting each week in the BPK Weekly Digest
-for Fall we have Clubs Days to advertise during, could also make presentations in first year classes (BPK 142, 143)
