Opening
The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 1:30pm on Thursday, November 14, 2013 in AQ 4130 by Steven.
In attendance
- Steven M., Alex, Loryn, Steven O., Brent, Debbie, Jake, Joyce, Gina, Sydney, Taylor, Mohammed
Open Issues
- Mentorship Program
- Taylor (PhD rep) came to talk and ask us about starting a mentorship program between grad and undergrad students
- How to better integrate undergrad and grad programs
- SFU Grad program is solely researched based
- Mentorship program for undergrads that are interested to see what’s going on
- Attract more undergrads to graduate studies
- Goals:
- 1. recruit top notch undergrad students to be grad students
- 2. showcase our research
- 3. allow students to be immersed in research environment
- Feedback on what we think: We all think it’s an awesome idea
- Best place to recruit: career night, talk to 304, 305, 306 for grad student to do a guest lecture, promote through co-op, set-up something at research day, BPK orientation
- Grad students write a little bio and students can choose who they want to work with
- Students willingness to do it is more important than their GPA
- Maybe recruiting 1st years could be a good idea
- Bowling Event
- Steven sent out reminder e-mails last night
- Steven may not be able to make it so Alex will be in charge to greet people and pay for the event
- Career Event
- Joyce update: talked to Dave Clark (confirmed to speak), sent e-mail for Tom for him to send out request for lab tours, Sherri Fergusson willing to show undergrads the EPU, talk to Robinovitch, ask in Cardiac group
- Jesse confirmed to talk as Med student
- Mohammed finished grants for Glen and Claire
- Update from Darleen:
Alicia – SFU kin degree, co-op, Masters in public health, Med school at UBC (can’t confirm until January)
Trevor Randle is an OT (not SFU grad) that works for CBI
- Clothing
- Send Debbie your availability for table!
- BPK enrollment issues
- USRA problem – when students come back from co-op they’ve been having problem with enrollment
- There have been issues lately with people’s late enrollment
- These issues should be addressed to admissions
- UPC Updates
- Bio department is organizing a new first year summer program – for students from all departments (BioChem, BPK, ect.)
- Lab-based program want to get kin involved – what kind of things would first years students be able to do to design a question for a lab and execute it? Any ideas of what they would do? Example: “what bone produces the most torque?”
- Students to start thinking in a research way
