Open Issues:

1) Approval of Previous Minutes

  • Emily P motioned to approve the meeting minutes of 2017-11-06. Emily B seconded.
  • Minutes approved unanimously

2) Kin Fair

  • Lower turnout
    • Saywell Atrium may have contributed
    • Bad timing with assignments and exams near the end of term
  • SFSS did not charge us for table/chair rental so we have money left over from the event

3) BCAK Webinar

  • Thursday November 23, 11am-12pm
  • Provide lunch using the leftover money from Kin Fair

4) Careers in BPK

  • Approximately 20 exhibitors have been invited
  • Each exhibitor will get half of a table
  • Invite non-SFU exhibitors first and then fill up extra space with SFU exhibitors
  • Keep all tables in the Saywell Atrium
  • Exhibitors have been contacted, responses are due November 30th
  • Additional exhibitors
    • Thompson River respiratory therapy
  • Some speakers have been contacted
  • Alec Yu and Alex Hoffer have been confirmed for Medicine
  • BIF Researcher
    • Could not find any BIF undergraduates working in research without doing any graduate studies
    • Will extend the search to BIF undergraduates who worked in research for a few years before doing a Master’s degree
  • Crystal and Jaskarn will work on the SFSS grant to be approved at the next meeting

5) BPK Department External Review Retreat

  • Monday November 27th
  • Discussing student concerns and goals for upcoming years
    • BPK 305 pre-requisite or co-requisite
    • Course planning, mental health
    • Advice about BIF careers options after graduation
  • If you would like to come, please specify what time in the doodle poll

6) Changing BPK 305 back to a co-requisite

  • Ask friends who are currently taking/already completed what they think about 305 being a pre-requisite or co-requisite for 306
  • Send opinions to bpksa@sfu.ca
  • Anonymous ideas will be brought up at a future department meeting
  • General consensus is that BPK 305 being a pre-requisite for BPK 306 does not improve students’ grades in either course, and delays graduation

7) Departmental Committee Representative, Kinesiology

  • Position will be open starting in the Spring semester
  • Department meetings are Thursdays from 11:30-1:00
  • If you are interested in the position, email bpksa@sfu.ca

Jaskarn motioned to approve a $100 contribution to Bader Al-Zeer’s travel cost to go to a neuroscience conference from travel conference funding. Meghan seconded it. Motion was passed unanimously.

Brittany motioned to reimburse Jaskarn $70 for prizes for Kin Fair from the trust fund. Emily P seconded it. Motion was passed unanimously.
