Meeting Minutes

Thursday, October 15, 2015

Opening:

The meeting of the BPKSA was called to order at 11:30am by Loryn in the BPK Graduate Student Lounge.

In Attendance:

Loryn, Garveen, Sam, Megan, Omid, Daniel, Kelsey, Meghan, Pavan, Jazmine, Ashly, Matt, Debbie, Shaila, Kirsten, Jake, Lois

Open Issues:

1) Careers in BPK

-the last few years the event has been held in the Saywell Hall Atrium (a little more expensive, but better flow and people are more likely to stay in the area) but in past years it was held in ASB (cheaper)

-Saywell Hall works a bit better to set up the exhibitors in and serve dinner so we will go with this venue again (can’t book the Atrium until January though but it hasn’t been a problem the past few years)

-Professions for speakers: Med, Physio and OT for sure

-Darleen suggested having our new prof Dr. Sam Doesburg (researches cognitive function and medical imaging) as the 4th speaker so he can talk about his research and we all agree that this would be great!

-will save BCIT for an exhibitor table, if they are willing to come

-For Presenters:

-Med: we can ask Joyce, Ian and Gina for students; need Darleen to ask a practicing physician

-OT: need Darleen to ask both a current student and practicing OT

-Physio: Darren and Phil are both students who are going to Australia to study so we can ask if they will still be around in January. Besides that we don’t know of any new students at UBC, but Leanna Cutri came last year and we can hopefully have her return if need be. Ashly and Jake will both ask PTs they know.

-UBC’s Career Event is the same day but ends at 4pm while ours starts around 4:30pm, since we begin with a breakout session the exhibitors aren’t really needed until 5:30ish so it shouldn’t be a problem

2) Kin Week

-Tues Oct 27th in IRMACS from 12-1pm, there is a webinar too so the presentation can be watched online

-presentation itself is by Farron Fedechko, an SFU Kin Grad, who will speak about Vestibular Therapy (will review anatomy/function, cause of vertigo and dizziness, how the therapy works, what history is important to take, what are common signs, symptoms and triggers, will discuss exactly what a Vestibular Therapist does)

-event is free for students

-to RSVP you need to email the BCAK (office@bcak.bc.ca) by October 22nd

-the BCAK will supply $200 towards food (we will wait about applying for a grant until after the RSVP deadline)

3) Fall Social Event

-bouldering in Coquitlam is $14.50 for 2 hours but they can only book on Nov 2-3 plus it is a little harder to get to by transit

-The Hive has a bigger gym, is easier to get to by transit, is $25 per person plus have no booking restrictions (but recommend early morning or evening for a really large group)

-we could subsidize $10-15 per person up to 25 people (may make early bird tickets only $10 and then tickets at the door $15)

-event will be Friday Nov 20th (then the RSVP/early bird payment deadline would be Nov 10th)

-Ashly will email The Hive and then we can decide on a time and the pricing details afterwards

4) BodyWorlds

-$19.75 per person is the ticket price, we will subsidize $4.75 per person to make it a flat rate of $15

-will give students until Oct 23rd to RSVP (event is Wed Nov 4th at 1:30pm) and then we can discuss applying for the grant once we know the exact numbers

-Loryn will update Diana about the new price and will also email all the undergrads about the event

5) SUS Updates

-have raised $975 from all science DSU’s towards alcohol for the Molecules and Moustaches event on Fri Nov 13

-there was a suggestion of holding a Science Winter Formal at the DAC Sunday Dec 13th and tickets would be estimated to be $40 (we feel that the price is a little high and that the date is not ideal being right in the middle of exams)

6) Clothing

-order forms have been sent out and are due Friday Oct 30th

-we will be set up outside the BPK Main Office collecting order forms and money from 11am to 2pm on Tues Oct 27th, Wed Oct 28th and Fri Oct 30th (please sign up for a shift if you have not yet: http://doodle.com/poll/pr8n5bzsvc6vepwd)

-the clothing should be here before finals!

-from the WebSurvey that was also sent out to staff & students the most popular suggestions for items are: lanyards, zip-up hoodies, hoodies with no zipper, dri-fit t-shirts, a new design for t-shirts, water bottles, toques, zip-up water proof jackets, poster, socks, shorts

-Sam can ask Ty about creating a new neuron design for the Spring clothing sale
